Innovation

Identifying gaps in conventional systems – and engineering solutions to close them

JEFF LYTTLE
Managing Director
"Innovation is at the core of everything we do"

Innovation at Green Energy Engineering Ltd is driven by real-world project experience.

Through the design and delivery of renewable energy systems, our Managing Director, Jeff Lyttle, identified key limitations in how many systems perform in practice — particularly in control, integration, and overall efficiency.

These insights have shaped a focused approach to innovation: addressing gaps often overlooked and developing practical, engineering-led solutions that deliver measurable performance improvements.

This has led to the development of a targeted range of products and system enhancements, each designed for real-world application, integration, and reliability.

Each innovation is developed to address specific challenges within system design, supporting a more effective and dependable route to decarbonisation.

INNOVATION: VOLTERA

Intelligent control for low-carbon buildings

Voltera is an advanced Intelligent Home Energy Management System (HEMS) developed to optimise how renewable energy is generated, monitored and utilised within homes and buildings using heat pumps or air conditioning systems.

Designed around real-world heating and cooling demands, Voltera goes beyond conventional solar diversion systems. It continuously analyses both solar generation and household energy demand to intelligently prioritise available renewable energy where it delivers the greatest benefit — improving comfort, reducing imported electricity, and enhancing overall system efficiency.

At the core of the system is an intelligent solar priority control strategy that dynamically manages energy flow throughout the property.

Voltera prioritises energy use in the following sequence:

  • Heat pump or air conditioning demand
  • Household electrical loads
  • Buffer tank charging
  • Domestic hot water (DHW) heating
  • Export of surplus electricity to the grid

This structured energy hierarchy ensures renewable energy is intelligently distributed in line with real-time demand profiles and system behaviour, maximising on-site solar utilisation before exporting energy.

In addition to advanced control functionality, Voltera provides comprehensive real-time energy monitoring and performance insight. By continuously monitoring electrical consumption and energy movement across connected systems, it enables meaningful analysis of:

  • Heat pump electrical consumption
  • Estimated heat pump CoP performance
  • Estimated heat energy delivered to heating systems
  • Solar PV generation and utilisation
  • Household electrical demand
  • Grid import and export tracking
  • Energy diverted to domestic hot water and buffer tank heating
  • Overall imported versus self-generated energy usage

This data is presented in a clear, accessible format, allowing homeowners and installers to better understand system behaviour, improve optimisation, and support long-term performance evaluation.

Designed for flexibility and ease of integration, Voltera:

  • Integrates with a wide range of heat pump and air conditioning systems
  • Works with or without battery storage
  • Is suitable for both retrofit and new-build applications
  • Requires minimal disruption to existing installations
  • Operates without requiring behavioural changes from occupants
  • Maintains heating and cooling performance without compromise

Voltera represents a more intelligent approach to renewable energy management — combining intelligent solar priority control, advanced monitoring, and performance optimisation in a single integrated platform designed specifically for homes with ASHP or AC systems.

INNOVATION: BUFFER TANK

Space-efficient thermal stability for modern systems

Our compact 50L square buffer tank has been developed to address the spatial constraints commonly encountered in renewable energy installations.

Traditional cylindrical buffer tanks can be difficult to accommodate within retrofit projects, plantrooms, and space-restricted building layouts. This in-house engineered solution delivers full buffer functionality within a significantly reduced footprint, without compromising system performance.

The square form factor has been specifically designed to improve integration within a wide range of building types, allowing for:

  • Installation in tight or constrained spaces
  • Greater flexibility in plantroom and system design
  • Improved suitability for retrofit and space-limited applications

Beyond its compact design, the buffer tank plays a key role in system operation. By providing short-term thermal storage and hydraulic stability, it:

  • Reduces heat pump cycling
  • Supports stable and efficient operation
  • Maintains consistent system water temperatures

The result is a practical, space-efficient buffer solution designed for real-world renewable installations.
